Get help

You can ask the assistant, read the guides, or email me if you need help.

Ask the assistant

The Wheelhouse Assistant uses the project’s documentation to answer questions. You don’t have to know which section to look in.

Open the Wheelhouse Assistant ↗

The Wheelhouse Assistant runs on Google's Gemini Notebook, so you must sign in with a Google Account. The account is free, and Google does not ask for a credit card. You can use an email address you already have; a Gmail address is not necessary. To create an account, click "Create account" on the Google sign-in page. If you are signed in with a work or school account and the Assistant does not open, sign in with a personal account instead.

The assistant can be mistaken. It can’t see your computer or read your logs unless you share them.

Email me

If you’ve found a problem, or the guides haven’t answered your question, you can email for help. You don’t need to make a GitHub account.

help@wheelhouse-project.org ↗

You can also report a problem on GitHub.

I’m the primary author, so I can’t promise an immediate reply.

Reporting a problem

Tell me what you were trying to do, what you expected, and what happened instead. Include the Wheelhouse version shown under About Wheelhouse in its menu, and the full error message if there is one.

If installation failed, the setup log can help. Before sending logs or screenshots, check them for anything you don’t want to share.

Use the documentation with another AI assistant

You can also give the documentation to an assistant you already use. The detailed instructions below cover the three documentation files and how to load them.

The hosted assistant. The project maintains a Wheelhouse assistant that answers from the current documentation: open the Wheelhouse Assistant (opens in a new tab).

The same documentation can be loaded into another AI service. Wheelhouse's user documentation is published as three files, formatted so that a chat service can answer questions from them: for example "how do I make my microphone work?" or "what do I say to select a whole line?". The procedures below cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Each works on that service's free plan, with one exception for Perplexity noted below.

You need three files:

  • wheelhouse_install.md — the installation guide

Installation, updates, removal, and speech-engine setup.

    wheelhouse_install.md on GitHub

  • wheelhouse_help.md — the help document

Open wheelhouse_help.md on GitHub and save it with the "Download raw file" button (the down-arrow icon near the top right of the file view). This file documents how to use Wheelhouse.

  • wheelhouse_reference.md — the action, notice, and setting reference

Open wheelhouse_reference.md on GitHub and save it the same way. This file lists every pattern action, every notice, and every configuration setting. Upload all three files so your assistant can answer both how-to questions and exact setting questions.

No instruction text needs to be pasted: the assistant's behavior rules are contained in the top of the help document, so the three uploaded files are sufficient. If a service refuses a .md upload, rename each file to end in .txt (for example wheelhouse_help.txt). The content is plain text.

The ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity procedures below were verified against each provider's official documentation in July 2026. The Gemini procedure was verified against Google's help pages in September 2026. Button names in these products change over time; the sequence of steps does not.

ChatGPT — use a Project

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com and click New project in the sidebar. Give the project a name like "Wheelhouse Help". (Projects are available on every plan, including Free. Do not create a custom GPT: OpenAI stops running them on 11 December 2026.)
  2. Inside the project, add wheelhouse_help.md, wheelhouse_install.md, and wheelhouse_reference.md in the project's files area.
  3. Start a new chat inside the project and ask your question. To come back later, click the project's name in the sidebar.

Google Gemini — use a Notebook

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in with your Google Account. Click Open sidebar, then New notebook under "Notebooks". (A free account can create notebooks and add up to 50 sources to each. You can also start at notebook.google.com with Create new notebook.)
  2. Give the notebook a name like "Wheelhouse Help".
  3. Click Add sources and upload wheelhouse_help.md, wheelhouse_install.md, and wheelhouse_reference.md. Google accepts .md files, so no renaming is needed.
  4. To use it later: open the sidebar at gemini.google.com, click All notebooks, pick your notebook, and ask your question.

Claude — use a Project

  1. Sign in at claude.ai and open Projects from the sidebar, then click New Project and name it. (The free plan includes up to five projects.)
  2. On the project page, find the knowledge section and use its + button to upload wheelhouse_help.md, wheelhouse_install.md, and wheelhouse_reference.md.
  3. Start a chat from the project page — every chat in the project uses the uploaded file automatically.

Perplexity — use a Project

  1. Sign in at perplexity.ai and click the projects icon in the left panel, then New Project. (Perplexity renamed this feature — older guides call it "Spaces". One caveat: Perplexity documents per-project file uploads only for its paid plans, so on the free plan you may not be able to upload the help file into a project.)
  2. Upload wheelhouse_help.md, wheelhouse_install.md, and wheelhouse_reference.md as project files.
  3. Ask questions inside the project — answers draw on the uploaded file in every thread in the project.
